Since 1996, San Diego Pride has distributed over $3 million to LGBTQIA+-serving nonprofits worldwide, making it the most philanthropic Pride organization globally.POSITION SUMMARYThe Director of Advocacy & Programs plays a key part in fulfilling San Diego Prides mission and vision to foster pride, equality, and respect for all LGBTQIA+ communities locally, nationally, and globally. In alignment with San Diego Prides strategic plan, the Director of Advocacy & Programs accomplishes their work by engaging with educational institutions, businesses, organizations, and the community at large, and by managing the organizations year-round programming and advocacy. This role involves managing staff, volunteers, and community partners to ensure the advancement of Pride's mission through program outcomes and advocacy for LGBTQIA+ civil rights. The Director of Advocacy & Programs ensures the organization and its programs align with Prides strategic plan and vision, offering recommendations for incorporating advocacy opportunities into Prides programs design, execution, and development. This position is also responsible for the internal and external cohesion of advocacy work within Pride events and communications. This position will identify and take action on current policy and advocacy opportunities for the LGBTQIA+ community and build and maintain relationships with community partner organizations, elected officials, and LGBTQIA+ leaders through collaborative projects and coalitions. This position will have two direct reports: Organizing & Outreach Coordinator and Programs Coordinator.ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESGeneral:Vision and Leadership: Works closely with the Executive Director and stakeholders to provide strategic vision, direction, and goal setting for San Diego Prides programmatic, advocacy, and philanthropic pillars based on thorough research, analysis, and community relationships with the broader LGBTQIA+ community. Research and Messaging Development: The Director of Advocacy & Programs provides research and works collaboratively with the Executive Director and Director of Marketing Communications to develop content for the organization on topics within the scope of programs and advocacy for both internal and external communications. Program Impact: Designs, executes, and develops Prides year-round programming in alignment with our strategic plan, values and pillars of justice. Ensures cohesive strategy around external partners, strategic collaborations and coalitions, outreach, organizing, and advocacy. This may include but is not limited to developing and implementing efficient programmatic plans and workflow, advising the creation and management of program budgets, and supervising and managing staff, interns, and volunteers. Specific Projects and Programs:Policy, Civic Engagement & Advocacy (30%)Lead the development of San Diego Prides policy agenda, guiding the organizations policy advocacy efforts, including building relationships with elected officials, developing policy positions, and mobilizing community action on emerging issues.Monitor and analyze social, political, and legislative issues that impact the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly in San Diego, and develop policy positions and advocacy strategies in response.Contribute to talking points, media responses, and proactive communications strategies related to policy, advocacy, and/or issues facing the LGBTQIA+ community in ways that raise the visibility and impact of San Diego Prides work.Oversee grassroots lobbying, community mobilization, leadership development, and civic engagement efforts, including voter education and non-partisan voter registration drives in collaboration with the Outreach & Organizing Coordinator.Advocacy & Pride 365 Programs (30%)Guide the Organizing & Outreach Coordinator and training facilitators to create a powerful and impactful Pride Empowerment Academy that trains and builds a cohort of LGBTQIA+ advocates, leaders, and organizers in San Diego on grassroots organizing strategy and tactics.Guide the Programs Coordinator to create a Youth Leadership Academy curriculum that empowers and equips LGBTQIA+ youth with resources and key professional development skillsDesign the content and curriculum of organizing training programs, including but not limited to the Pride Empowerment Academy and standalone workshops.In collaboration with the Event Production team, support year-round programs (Art of Pride, QAPIMEDA, Latine Coalition, Military, and Youth) in development and implementation of their programs, events, and goals. Provide direction and support as needed to the Events Production department and volunteer leadership in collaboration with the Director of Event Production.In collaboration with the Programs Coordinator and Organizing & Outreach Coordinator, manage the program(s) budget cycle including: training and communications with program liaisons and leads and coordination with the finance and operations department.Impact of Community Programs (10%)Work with Programs staff to ensure that Prides year-round programs are engaged and consistent with Prides strategic planning, public education and/or advocacy efforts.Provide regular assessment of impact and success of year-round volunteer-led community and advocacy programs. Ensure alignment of metrics and data collection with department goals and grant deliverables.Collaborate with Philanthropy department in strategizing impact and equitable implementation practice of annual Pride Community Grants programTraining Institute & Community Education (10%)Serve as lead point of contact of Prides Training Institute, which provides speaking and training opportunities related to LGBTQIA+ equity and inclusion, offering trainings that are fee-for-service, sponsorship fulfillment, and/or offered gratis to partner organizations. Hire and oversee a team of contracted education & training facilitator(s) to carry out LGBTQIA+ equity and inclusion and advocacy trainings for external clients and partnersInternally, provide trainings for incoming staff, volunteers, and/or interns about Prides programs and policy/advocacy positions or opportunities. Community Partnerships & Relationship Management (10%)Works with Director of Marketing Communications to develop strategic community engagement initiatives and grow relationships with local, national, and international organizations and leaders to build San Diego Prides reputation and influence locally, nationally, and globally.Work with Pride senior leadership to guide Prides strategic relationships with community partner organizations. Develop relationship management matrix including stakeholder representation on key coalitions, boards, and committees. Identify strong partnerships and areas of growth in developing meaningful community-based partnerships aligned to San Diego Prides Pillars of Justice across departments.Identify opportunities for program expansion through collaboration with the Director of Event Production bringing new funding and volunteer resources to the organization.In collaboration with the Event Production department, manage relationships and contract negotiations with new and existing nonprofit organizations and community groups to ensure Pride is able to meet its programmatic goals at the flagship Pride Week events and serve the diverse communities that comprise and intersect with the LGBTQIA+ community. Connect Pride Week partners with year-round programs as relevant and appropriate for programmatic success. Pride Week & Spirit of Stonewall Rally (5%)Create a meaningful, timely, and powerful Spirit of Stonewall Rally with the Outreach & Organizing Coordinator, including but not limited to coordinating awards nominations and selection process, event logistics, speakers, awardees, entertainment, elected officials, and volunteer team. Coordinate Spirit of Stonewall awardee and Grand Marshall parade contingent logisticsOversee the Outreach & Organizing Coordinators efforts to coordinate the Spirit of Stonewall Rally, ensuring its alignment with the organization's mission and goals.Act as a liaison between San Diego Pride and law enforcement officials on decision making around interactions with participants during Pride Week events Staff Management (5%)Mentor and guide staff across the Advocacy & Programs department to maintain a culture of excellence, collaboration, and impact.Collaborate closely with other departments to ensure alignment across all programs and external communications. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCELanguage: English fluency is required, and Spanish written/spoken proficiency is highly preferred.Education & Experience: 5-10 years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit management, program or volunteer management, public policy, advocacy, or community organizing, with a focus on LGBTQIA+ issues. An advanced degree or equivalent experience is strongly preferred. Leadership & Management: Proven experience leading diverse teams of multiple direct-reports, overseeing program implementation, and managing cross-departmental collaboration.Program Design & Evaluation: Expertise in developing and assessing programs that align with organizational goals, using data-driven approaches to ensure measurable outcomes and continuous improvement.Compliance & Grant Management: Experience managing program-specific funding, including grant reporting and ensuring compliance with 501(c)(3) lobbying regulations.Policy & Advocacy: Strong knowledge of LGBTQIA+ policy issues, grassroots lobbying, and voter mobilization, with experience engaging marginalized communities.Community Engagement: Proven ability to build and expand partnerships with community organizations and stakeholders to enhance program visibility and impact.Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and media engagement.Technical Skills: Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and volunteer management software (e.g., Better Impact).
