Director, Center for Hospital Throughput Science OH

New Today

Cleveland Clinic is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and accomplished mid-level to senior hospitalist researcher to serve as Director of the newly established Program for Hospital Throughput Science within the Department of Hospital Medicine, part of the Integrated Hospital Care Institute (IHI). This strategic leadership role will guide an ambitious research agenda focused on improving hospital throughput, optimizing transitions of care, and reducing length of stay while maintaining high-quality, patient-centered outcomes.
Position Responsibilities The Director will be expected to:
Lead and grow a research program focused on hospital throughput, including transitions of care, discharge efficiency, capacity optimization, and system-level interventions. Develop and lead externally funded research projects (e.g., NIH, AHRQ, PCORI, foundations). Collaborate with clinical and operational leaders across the Cleveland Clinic enterprise to test and implement evidence-based strategies. Mentor junior investigators and clinician-scholars in hospital medicine and related disciplines. Serve as a national voice in throughput research, publishing findings and presenting at major academic forums. Over time, help establish training opportunities such as a T32 or K12 mechanism related to health systems science and hospital operations.
Candidate Qualifications
MD, DO, or equivalent with board certification in Internal Medicine and fellowship or equivalent training in health services research, implementation science, or related field. Demonstrated record of independent scholarship with peer-reviewed publications and grant support. Experience in applied research in health systems, hospital operations, quality improvement, or care transitions. A collaborative leadership style with the ability to build cross-disciplinary teams. Mid-career or senior candidates with existing funding or strong potential for extramural support preferred.
Institutional Commitment The successful candidate will join a vibrant and growing research ecosystem within the Integrated Hospital Care Institute (IHI). In addition to the Department of Hospital Medicine, IHI also includes the Departments of Anesthesiology, Emergency Services, Infectious Diseases, and Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, as well as Cleveland Clinic’s Centers for Critical Care and Perioperative Medicine. This integrated structure makes IHI uniquely suited to studying the full patient journey—from preoperative care and emergency presentation through critical illness, inpatient treatment, and discharge planning—and to developing research programs that cross traditional departmental boundaries.
Moreover, the Cleveland Clinic’s wide geographic footprint—including its main campus, regional hospitals, and national/international affiliates—provides a unique platform for studying hospital operations and care transitions at scale, enabling multicenter implementation research and real-world impact. The candidate will also have the opportunity to collaborate with Cleveland Clinic’s growing Hospital Care at Home program, a high-acuity alternative to traditional hospitalization that expands the continuum of inpatient care into the community. This innovative care model offers fertile ground for throughput, capacity, and systems research spanning both hospital-based and home-based settings.
The IHI is also deeply committed to the development of junior faculty. Support is available for early-career physician-investigators to pursue graduate training in public health or implementation science (e.g., MPH, MS), along with structured mentorship, internal grant programs, and research-in-progress forums to cultivate successful academic careers. Additional infrastructure, regulatory, and analytical support is provided by Cleveland Clinic Research and by IHI’s DASH group (Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Statistics for the Integrated Hospital Care Institute), which together offer centralized services for biostatistics, data extraction, grant writing, REDCap development, and regulatory navigation.
The position is supported by:
Dedicated protected research time and administrative support. Competitive start-up package and access to analysts, data scientists, and grant development resources. Opportunities to collaborate with enterprise data science, operations leadership, and the Center for Value-Based Care Research. Support for graduate coursework or advanced training for both the Director and junior faculty within the program
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, and a 1–2 page statement of research interests and vision for the Program for Hospital Throughput Science.
