Overview Director, Assistant General Counsel - Business Core We are seeking an experienced and collaborative legal leader to join our TechReg Legal team as the lead legal partner for the Business Core tower of our Customer Identity and Core team (CIC). The CIC team manages the enterprise system of record for millions of customers, enabling access to the company’s digital experiences and protecting customer account information at the highest level of security. You will partner with Product, Engineering, and Design teams to provide clear, practical legal advice that supports innovation within a complex regulatory landscape, handling everything from product counseling to managing issues and events. This role is hybrid, with in-person days required three days per week at a Capital One office (as listed in the job posting). Fridays are enterprise-wide virtual work days. The actual salary offered will be based on location and other factors. What you’ll do Be a strategic thought partner and advisor: Provide proactive, business-minded legal advice to senior product leaders on the evolution of the Business Core. You’ll investigate cross-line-of-business projects to understand objectives, full legal landscape, and context to apply the law to business initiatives. Translate the law: Act as the subject matter expert on regulatory issues, collaborating with regulatory SMEs on novel issues. Understand the business, customers (including small business and commercial), technology, and communicate legal requirements to the business and vice versa. Quarterback: Serve as the Legal point person for your area. Own defined legal issues including drafting product terms, reviewing marketing collateral, and interfacing with business leaders, with support from the Legal Team. Build scalable solutions: Help build processes, playbooks, and training materials to enable product teams to move quickly and confidently. Review product feature changes for regulatory compliance, identify obligations or risks, and provide recommendations to manage legal risk (e.g., revising user-facing content, drafting product terms and disclosures, and assisting with strategic partnerships). Perform legal research on new and existing laws as applied to technology, develop legal theories for complex use cases, and influence business strategy and decisions. Who you are You are intellectually curious, proactive, business-oriented, and able to break down complex legal topics for non-legal audiences. You have a passion for technology, a collaborative spirit, and are comfortable learning new areas of law within the B2B space. Basic Qualifications Juris Doctor from an accredited law school Active member in good standing of at least one state bar At least 5 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, government, military judge advocate, or in-house counsel At least 5 years of experience in small business or commercial law practice Preferred Qualifications 8+ years of experience as a practicing attorney focused on small business or commercial law 8+ years in an in-house role or blended law firm/in-house experience supporting ecommerce, mobile apps, payments, software products, or related agreements Strong written and oral communication skills Ability to build strong relationships across teams This role is also eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses or long-term incentives.
