Overview
The Office of Public Health and Safety works to address the root causes of crime and addictions and aims to reduce violence in Indianapolis neighborhoods. The office convenes public safety and public health agencies along with community partners to execute focused policy efforts in the areas of food security, re-entry, homelessness, violence reduction and behavioral health. The agency is able to do this by cultivating a productive, collaborative, and compliant work environment in order for our workforce to meet the needs of the residents of Indianapolis and Marion County.
Position Responsibilities
Implements the City's GVRS.
Oversee operations of the Community Justice Campus's Release Lobby.
Oversee programs, contracts, and funding as directed by the OPHS director.
Oversee the distribution of the City's annual Crime Prevention Grants.
Act as a proxy for the Director in their absence for media relations and interviews.
Advocates on behalf of OPHS for the implementation and expansion of the overall crime reduction program and reentry programs in Marion County.
Liaise between OPHS and other city/county agencies including but not limited to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Marion County Courts, and the Marion County Sherriff's Office.
Develops public safety and violence reduction policy in conjunction with the Office of the Mayor, along with IMPD, Prosecutors Office, and Supervising Agencies and re-entry services.
Directs spending as approved by the City-County Council for OPHS's group violence intervention (GVI) and violence reduction efforts.
Serves with the OPHS director and OPHS chief communications officer as the public face of OPHS’s violence reduction efforts.
Works with the Administrator of Behavioral Health to develop policy initiatives with respect to substance abuse disorder, mental health, and behavioral health to address the intersection of these issues with violence and the criminal justice system.
Maintain clear lines of communication with the Director of OPHS to ensure community needs and public safety information is being handled appropriately.
Must maintain confidentiality at all times where required.

Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Investigations, Social Services, or a related field with five (5) years' work experience which includes supervisory roles with progressive responsibilities. Extensive knowledge of public safety issues and policy matters. Ability to coordinate multiple projects and meet various deadlines. Must have excellent communications skills both orally and written. Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Preferred Job Requirements And Qualifications
Master's Degree in Criminal Investigations, Social Services, or a related field with two (2) years' work experience which includes supervisory roles with progressive responsibilities. Extensive knowledge of public safety issues and policy matters. Knowledge of local government operations and the local legislative process. Familiarity with the Indianapolis community and key community leaders in the area of violence reduction. Personal and professional experience in applied violence reduction strategies particularly group violence intervention principles.
