Skills: The choir/music director should have a working knowledge and ability to apply music skills. It is imperative that she or he be able to read traditional music notation and be able to pick out single melodic lines on a piano or keyboard. She or he should be able to sing well enough to lead congregational singing and demonstrate vocal lines in choir/praise band repertoire. A basic understanding of healthy vocal production and pedagogy, as well as choral methods, are helpful. The ability to meaningfully communicate between vocal and instrumental musicians is important. Familiarity with traditional hymns in addition to contemporary worship songs is preferred. Spiritual: Most importantly, she/he should have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as her/his Savior, and seek to live according to Biblical truth and in harmony with the discipline of Cross Plains United Methodist Church. This is a leadership position that reflects not only musical skill but also character and heart aligned with Christ’s teachings. Responsibilities include: Planning and leading congregational and special music for weekly services, focusing on seasonal liturgy and coordinating with the pastor’s sermon and scripture. Conducting weekly choir rehearsals. Selecting and preparing materials for seasonal cantatas and programs. Managing the music budget for purchasing new music. Coordinating with the audio engineer for technical needs, assessing equipment needs, and handling repairs or purchases. Preparing slides in Proclaim presentation software for services. Coordinating singers and instrumentalists for church events and community programs. Serving on the Council of Ministries.
