Camp Counselor Position
To assist the Boys Camp Director in assessing cabin counselor performance daily to assure standards are maintained. Train and develop staff members, while providing feedback that allows for the continual growth and development of staff. Ensure that male campers and staff are physically and emotionally safe at camp, while also having fun.
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting Boys Camp Director in assessing cabin counselor performance daily to assure standards are maintained.
- Being present in the cabin areas on a daily basis (all meals, program times, during shower and devotion periods).
- Interacting with campers and staff on a daily basis.
- Conducting face checks to ensure that all staff and campers are present at the appropriate times.
- Providing direction to both staff and campers who are not following rules or contractual obligations.
- Assisting in the supervision during shower and devotional times.
- Coordinating and supervising cabin night activity.
- Managing "area duty" responsibilities of male staff members.
- Assisting in the collection and sorting of bridge laundry for all male bridge campers and staff members.
- Assisting in providing feedback that allows for effective growth and development of male staff members.
- Conducting regular area meetings.
- Lending support to male staff members after lights out in the cabin areas.
- Observing, correcting and evaluating male staff members concerning their interactions and leadership with campers.
- Assisting in the completion of written mid-season and end of season evaluations for each male staff member. Verbally going over these evaluations with the staff member.
- Conducting cabin cleanliness checks on Opening and Closing Day of each session.
- Ensuring that male campers and staff are physically and emotionally safe, while also having fun at Camp Cherokee.
- Greeting and accommodating parents as needed on Opening day.
- Visiting any camper or male staff member that may be in the Health Center.
- Checking e-mails and voicemails daily, communicating directly with parents concerning their camper(s).
- Contacting parents of all first year campers by Wednesday of each session.
- Assisting in the management and return of all lost and found items.
- Assisting other program staff when needed.
- Opening/Closing Day Responsibilities.
- Assisting Evening Program Director.
- Planning and supervising campers and staff during "bridge" sessions.
- Actively assisting in "OD" responsibilities.
- Assisting with supervision during off site trips.
- Selecting an Honor Cabin at the end of each session; presenting the honor creatively at closing banquet.
- Assisting in delivering mail.
- Identifying and managing cabin supply needs.
- Additional responsibilities as directed by the camp director team.
Qualifications include:
- Must be 19 years of age or have completed at least two years of college.
- Must be certified in First Aid and CPR.
- Must attend all pre-camp training, retreats, and opening training session.
- Possess leadership qualities and ability to use sound judgment.
- Good health, enthusiasm, individual maturity, moral character, team qualities, and communication skills.
- Possess interest in the development of children.
- Must be able to endure hot temperatures, physical exertion, manual labor, behavioral conflicts, and must be able to walk, run, and swim every day.
