Departmental Overview The Office of Undergraduate Admissions provides a fair opportunity for every applicant to obtain admission, communicates and collaborates effectively, and delivers first-class customer service in a cost-effective and transparent manner. Position Summary The AVC and Director will refine and implement enrollment strategies, lead day-to-day undergraduate admissions activities, and manage the offices strategic plan across recruitment, reading, admission, enrollment and matriculation. The AVC oversees an office of ~50 full-time staff and ~200 seasonal readers, and manages an $11 million budget. The role requires strategic thinking, leadership, and a track record in undergraduate admissions. A bachelors degree is required; a masters degree is preferred. The AVC will lead external-facing efforts and collaborate with Enrollment Management and campus colleagues to meet ambitious goals. The position includes direct reports and cross-unit coordination with Housing, Financial Aid, Alumni, and other campus partners. Responsibilities Manage the campus undergraduate admissions and readmission programs and processes; make data-driven, strategic decisions that affect long-term university success. Advance access and social mobility through admissions policies and practices; monitor and report on admissions processes and initiate new procedures, data analysis, and research when needed. Ensure the security and integrity of undergraduate admissions files and compliance with policies and laws. Coordinate admissions selection, supplemental reviews, and notification with campus partners; handle appeals and responses to appeals. Direct development of reports, data analyses, and computer systems to inform the public, campus, and UC system on admissions, recruitment, and yield. Provide leadership across Enrollment Management, maintain relationships with campus units, and participate in executive-level planning and policy discussions. Oversee communication strategies, including marketing plans, outreach, and public relations to support targeted recruitment, including underrepresented groups. Develop and manage the annual Marketing and Recruitment Plan and ensure alignment with campus enrollment goals. Lead and mentor staff, foster a culture of openness, accountability, and learning, and ensure effective reporting and evaluation mechanisms. Represent UC Berkeley in external boards and committees and coordinate system-wide admissions policy discussions. Manage an $11 million budget and supervise 5 direct reports. Required Qualifications Demonstrated knowledge of admissions policy, trends, and target management. Strong organizational and resource-management skills; experience leading teams. Advanced knowledge of higher education processes, budgets, and HR considerations. Ability to set and monitor departmental goals and improve processes and services. Strong collaboration with faculty and campus entities; political acumen and openness to policy reconsideration. Experience working with system-wide Admissions Office and knowledge of FERPA and related policies. Bachelors degree required; significant experience in admissions and staff management; masters degree preferred. Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree in a related field; experience in large public universities or selective admissions. Expert knowledge of admissions policy, target setting, and outreach programs; experience with underrepresented, non-resident, and international recruitment. Knowledge of OC President, BOARS, AEPE; bilingual/multilingual capabilities. Salary & Benefits The budgeted salary range is $200,000 to $210,000.
