Overview
The Global Communications and Media Relations office works to promote the Council on Foreign Relations’ programs, publications, and scholars. It uses the full complement of channels and platforms to reach target audiences, including traditional and social media outreach, webcasts, podcasts, conference calls, and press briefings.
The Assistant Director is responsible for positioning and promoting CFR, with a primary focus on the media relations efforts for Foreign Affairs magazine and its website, ForeignAffairs.com. This position reports directly to the Vice President, Global Communications and Media Relations.
The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):
Develop and implement media strategies for Foreign Affairs print and online content
Write and edit news releases, press notes, media advisories, and other promotional materials for Foreign Affairs
Maintain the project management process and calendar for releases and other outreach opportunities
Proactively pitch Foreign Affairs content, authors, and editors to the full range of media channels, aggregators, and newsletters
Attend Foreign Affairs editorial and marketing meetings, and brief the CFR communications team, as well as marketing leads across the organization
Execute targeted press campaigns for print and web-only content across the full range of domestic and international media, including broadcast, print, podcasts, aggregators, newsletters, and events
Responsible for Foreign Affairs email blasts to media and CFR members using Sailthru ESP templates
Use media and web analytics programs to track and report impact and results. Seek to increase media referrals and inbound links to the website
Expand the quality and scope of national and international media lists
Coordinate marketing strategy meetings for each issue of the magazine
Serve as liaison between the magazine and the organization to foster cross promotion across CFR channels, including newsletters and social media
Work with Foreign Affairs business and editorial teams to build external outreach campaigns that advance the full range of the magazine’s priorities
Work with external authors and their institutional communications teams to increase earned media opportunities and amplification across externally owned channels
Leverage the profile and reach of Foreign Affairs authors and editorial staff by arranging broadcast and print interviews, conference call briefings, and other press opportunities
Manage media at on-the-record Foreign Affairs LIVE events, as well as issue launch events at CFR
Pay Range
$60,000 to $65,000 per year
Pay commensurate with experience and education
Qualifications
4 + years of related experience in media relations
Excellent writing skills, and extensive experience writing news releases and copy editing, a must
Proven knowledge of and interest in current U.S. foreign policy and international affairs
Excellent communication and consensus-building skills
Proven track record of working with external partners and stakeholders to implement fast-moving, multifaceted media campaigns
Strong working knowledge of international issues and media landscape
Degree in Communications, International Affairs, or related field
Proven ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment
Excellent computer skills including MS Word, Excel, CRM, Sailthru, Trendkite, Muckrack/Cision, and database management
Existing relationships with top-tier U.S. and international media strongly preferred
Candidates must be proactive, organized, and able to function in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Candidates must have the ability and willingness to work flexible hours, when necessary
