We’re currently searching for an Assistant Director for International Student Services to join the Cranwell International Center (CIC) team in Blacksburg, VA to help us in our mission. This position reports to the Associate Director for International Student Services (ADISS) and serves in a leadership role in Cranwell International Center, working to ensure the university's compliance with federal regulations governing the enrollment of international students and exchange visitors while managing a portfolio of immigration casework and advising international students, functioning as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), certified by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the US Department of State (DOS) respectively, utilizing the DHS Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), and requiring specialized knowledge and expertise for the interpretation and application of complex federal regulations and academic policies and procedures.

The Assistant Director will be a critical part of the International Student Services leadership, working in coordination with the ADISS. The AD will be responsible for supervision of the international student advisors and will provide primary oversight over one or more areas of International Student Services [assessment, communication, outreach, etc.] which is assigned, consistent with the needs of the unit, and in coordination and cooperation with the Associate Director. Here’s what you need to know about the role:
1. You’ll be joining the Cranwell International Center, a department that exists to articulate, advocate, and act in support of international students, amplifying their contributions to the Virginia Tech community and to the advancement of the university as more globally oriented and internationally connected.
2. You’ll report to the Associate Director for International Student Services (ADISS). This position is a Regular, Calendar Year, 100% Administrative Professional appointment.
3. You’ll be responsible for supporting the ADISS in creating and sustaining an excellent advising experience for Virginia Tech international students through supervision, project support, immigration case management, and student advising.
4. You’ll have the chance to grow and take advantage of a developmental plan with opportunities to advance within the Department and the Division.
5. You’ll be offered a salary range from $60,000 - $65,000 plus a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, paid leave, retirement, tuition assistance, VT discounts, and so much more!
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree or equivalent experience - Experience and strong understanding of Department of Homeland Security regulations as it pertains to F-1 students. - Demonstrated experience developing, reviewing and implementing processes and procedures - Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. - Demonstrated strong interpersonal communications skills. - Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver professional presentations - Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and balance competing priorities- Demonstrated collaboration and engagement with individuals from assorted backgrounds and multicultural communities, within and across organizational boundaries. - Demonstrated proficiency using the US Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). - Eligibility for certification by DHS as a Designated School Official (DSO) and certification by the US Department of State as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) – must be US citizen or US lawful permanent resident.
Preferred Qualifications
-Active involvement with NAFSA: Association of International Educators or other higher education associations -Experience as an Alternate Responsible Officer -Demonstrated experience mentoring and/or training International Student Advisors/DSOs -Experience and understanding of Department of Homeland Security regulations as it pertains to J-1 students. -Experience with Banner or other SIS -Experience with Sunapsis or other student immigration management software -Fluency in a foreign language -Strong intercultural competency and communication skills
