The Assistant Dental Director is responsible for providing quality dental care in a primary care setting to patients and families in a Patient Centered Health Home context, focusing on access to care and overseeing the services of Staff Dentists and dental support staff.
Description of Primary Responsibilities
1) Provides management to departmental staff
a) Responsible for performance management of assigned staff, including recognition, performance evaluations, and formal coaching and counseling.
b) Demonstrates core leadership behaviors and team one approach.
c) Creates a culture of accountability and excellence
d) Develops and manages an action plan across assigned employee base to support the strategic direction and obtainment of goals of the organization, effectively leading change when necessary.
e) Empowers staff through effective communication and talent building.
f) Delegates appropriate departmental duties and responsibilities to assigned team members while ensuring department performance.
g) Assists with the development of the departmental budget and monitors budget to ensure expenses do not exceed budget.
h) Ensures regulatory compliance for assigned departments, and compliance with all workflows, policies, and procedures.
i) Ensures employees receive instruction/training that is in compliance with training plan, including on the job training. Works with supervisor to ensure necessary remediation is taken.
j) Recommends workflow, policy, and procedure changes based on observations from performance metrics, outcomes, and feedback from supervisor.
k) Ensures department maintains compliance with all employee related reporting and tracking.
2) Responsible for the direct provision of dental services meeting all established productivity expectations.
a) Will provide comprehensive dental examination and will review appropriate x-rays, medical and dental histories to determine a diagnosis.
b) Expected to document visits accurately utilizing appropriate templates, and record relevant data to attain a diagnosis.
c) Accountable for attaining budgeted visits.
d) Responsible for meeting clinical care measures.
e) Accountable for locking records in the 72 hour window.
3) Responsible for number of diagnostic, preventive and restorative oral procedures.
a) Evaluate the current health and condition of the patient’s teeth to determine the diagnosis of any existing dental condition.
b) Inform patients on how to prevent dental problems and keep their teeth and mouth as healthy as possible.
c) Consider treatment methods and explain options with the patient to determine which works best based on their situation.
d) When appropriate, refer patients to orthodontists, oral surgeons, periodontists, or other specialists for more advanced dental procedures and treatment.
4) Accountable for providing excellent customer service and care.
a) Consistently behaves with courtesy when interacting with patients/family members, support staff, and Network staff.
b) Listens to patients/family members and shows an understanding of patients’ needs.
c) Responsible for providing the patient with educational materials and resources appropriate to the patient’s health literacy needs.
5) Accountable for patient status as measured by relevant clinical quality measures.
a) Dental Provider remains aware of wait time during the daily workflow.
b) Promotes and participates in daily huddles.
c) Incorporates the participation of ancillary health team members in managing the care of the patients/families.
d) Responsible for assisting in the assurance of clinical procedures and the maintenance of up-to-date clinical protocols.
e) Must consistently observe and assure OSHA, and Standard Precautions are maintained
f) Promote patient centered health home by interacting with medical professionals and ancillary staff in rendering comprehensive care.
g) Completes chart and peer review responsibility in a timely manner.
6) Assists supervisors in planning and implementing new programs for the dental department
a) Participates in Network Health Fairs, screening activities and other community outreach events.
b) Where relevant, assist the supervisor with input for performance evaluations of support staff and quality improvement.
c) Assist the NDD/CDD with the review and update of clinical policies and procedures, where relevant.
d) Where relevant, provides feedback and guidance to dental residents and dental assistant externs.
e) Participate in site and provider meetings in a meaningful way.
f) Responsible for participating with “On Call” coverage, per schedule.
7) Performs duties as assigned.
Description of Primary Attributes
Professional & Technical Knowledge:
1) Possesses specific advanced knowledge and skills, including written and verbal communication skills, computational, computer and technical skills, and mathematical knowledge frequently acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s Degree program with a recognized major or comparable experience, and;
2) Four years of leadership experience or 5 years of progressively greater responsibility or significant contributions to projects and initiatives that demonstrate leadership skills.
3) Performance of the duties and responsibilities of the job requires extensive formal training in Dentistry, including an understanding of the application of the theory and practices of the profession to the operations of the organization
Technical Skills:
1) Ability to prepare more complex documents in Microsoft Word, including creating tables, charts, graphs and other elements.
2) Ability to use Microsoft Excel to analyze data, including the use of formulas, functions, lookup tables and other standard spreadsheet elements.
3) Ability to develop sophisticated presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint, including the use of embedded objects, transitions and other elements.
Licenses & Certifications: License to practice dentistry in the state of California.
Communications Skills:
1) Job duties require the employee to effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, their opinions and extrapolations of information they collect and synthesize/analyze.
2) Responsible for the resolution of conflicts that may arise because of disagreements between employees, between employees and customers/clients, or with the public, other legal entities or governmental authorities.
3) Compiles, analyzes and prepares information in an effective written form, including correspondence, reports, articles or other documentation.
4) Effectively conveys technical information to non-technical audiences.
