PRIMARY PURPOSE
The Area Director (AD) is a member of The Office of Campus Living and provides leadership for a residential area within the Campus Living footprint. The AD oversees the safety and development of the residential area they are assigned to by conducting student outreach, supervising student leaders, and managing housing operations processes. The ideal candidate will support Campus Living’s four foundations: Purpose; Relationships; Social Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; and Wellness, have earned a master’s degree in Student Affairs or a related field and have demonstrated experience in student and community development, crisis management, and leadership. To be successful in this position, the individual must excel at cultivating positive relationships with a diverse student community, mentoring student leaders, and effectively responding to emergency situations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Residential Student Engagement Cultivate positive relationships with a diverse community of residential students through consistent and intentional outreach and maintaining a presence in the assigned community
Develop a deep understanding of community needs through regular student engagement and creating opportunities for student feedback.
Provide support to students experiencing personal and academic challenges through interpersonal conflict mediation, connection to campus resources, and the use of helping skills.
Communicate effectively with campus partners such as the Case Manager, Counselors, Campus Safety, and Academic Advising to coordinate student support efforts.
Support residents in planning and hosting resident lead programs and events
Provide resources and support to students for developing a respectful and inclusive community that fosters dialogue across difference
Staff Supervision & Training Supervise the daily work, and evaluate the performance of, 5-12 student leaders
Mentor and develop student staff members focusing on leadership growth and professional development through weekly 1:1s and staff meetings
Assist in developing and implementing a comprehensive training program for all student leaders beginning with August training and continuing through the academic year
Student Conduct Adjudicate student conduct cases, and generate educational sanctions through a restorative justice lens
Maintain accurate record-keeping throughout the conduct process using the Maxient database.
Address community conduct concerns by holding community meetings and crafting all-community emails
Provide mediation support to students in conflict
Living Learning Community (LLC) Leadership Develop programs, events, and learning outcomes for assigned LLCs
Work closely with campus partners to improve program and resources offerings for assigned LLCs
Work closely with LLC student leaders to ensure consistent and high quality program delivery is in alignment with learning outcomes
Assess LLC engagement and satisfaction
Emergency Response Participate in a 24 hour weekly on-call rotation for on-campus emergencies
Respond to emergency situations while on call including facilities issues, student medical/psychological emergencies, campus-wide issues such as fire and power outages, and policy violations
Teamwork and Departmental Leadership Serve on Campus Living and Division of Student Life project groups and committees
Provide operational support to the central office by assisting with hall openings, hall closings, fire drills, and health and safety inspections
Work collaboratively with other campus living staff to improve processes and policies
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, & BEHAVIORS
Proficient in software applications such as Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Maxient and StarRez databases
Inclusive and emotionally intelligent interpersonal communication skills enabling effective collaboration with students, staff, and faculty.
Leadership abilities demonstrating a capacity to mentor and develop student leaders in a residential setting.
Organized with strong administrative skills to manage multiple tasks and work effectively independently
Commitment to promoting and enhancing inclusion in the workplace ensuring diverse perspectives are valued and integrated into campus living initiatives.
Excellent crisis management skills such as remaining calm under pressure to address emergencies effectively.
Conflict resolution skills including employing diplomacy and mediation techniques to support students and resolve interpersonal issues.
REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, or a related field (in progress or completed)
1 year of full–time or graduate assistant experience demonstrating a commitment to student and community development.
1 year of experience directly supervising or advising student organizations or student staff
1 year of full–time or graduate assistant experience in crisis management serving either in an on-call system or on a CARE/BIT team
Demonstrated commitment to supporting, and experience working with, diverse communities
PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
2 years of full–time or graduate assistant experience working within a college or university residential living community
Experience with budgeting and expense tracking
Experience planning and facilitating programs and events in a college or similar setting
Experience with StarRez and Maxient or similar housing and conduct databases
WORK SCHEDULE
Full Time: 37.5 hours/week

$43,888 annually

The physical ability, with or without accommodation, to navigate the entirety of the assigned residential community is crucial for this role as it involves regularly walking the assigned residential community, responding to emergency situations, and providing in-person support to different areas, all of which require quick and unrestricted movement across the campus grounds including the use of stairs.
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
